The Mugello 2The Mugello, birthplace of both Fra' Angelica and Giotti, is a place of beautiful hills, sweeping views and has a colourful history, covering the area to the north east of Florence. The Medici feature well in the area having built many impressive villas including Villa di Caffagiolo, a favourite of Lorenzo the Magnificent, and Villa di Careggi, acquired by the Medici in the fifteenth century and patronised by Michelangelo and Ficino among others. The largest towns are Borgo San Lorenzo and Fiesole, the former Etruscan fortress which overlooks the Arno valley in which the colony of Florentia was later founded by the Romans. Since the eighteenth century Fiesole has been a popular resort for tourists from around the world.
